Just 23% of sexually active high school students have ever been tested for HIV. However, youth ages 13 to 24 account for an estimated 26% of all new HIV infections in the U.S.

National Youth HIV and AIDS Awareness Day was April 10th and Hofstra will observe it as part of National Public Health Week with a panel titled “HIV: Isn’t there a Vaccine for That?”

Hofstra professor Dr Anthony Santella talks about trends in behavioral and biomedical prevention strategies and how to engage young people in issues surrounding HIV and AIDS.

Today Hofstra will play host to a day long conference on a theme of enduring importance: friendship. Writers, performers and even Hofstra professors will address among other things: friendship in the age of social media, the power of creative friendship and how studying friendship in the past allows us to rethink its future.

Professor Lauren Kozol, who co-organized the Friendship Symposium along with Professor Simon Doubleday, and clarinetist Kinan Azmeh came on Hofstra’s Morning Wake Up Call to talk about what we can expect from the day’s festivities.

Hofstra University is joining the growing ranks of campuses across the country that are making the SAT and ACT optional, rather than requiring students to submit scores from those admissions tests when they apply.

The school’s admissions officials will continue to focus on students’ high school academic records, as they have in the past.

The university came to this decision after several years of discussions among admissions officers, faculty and other campus officials.

Bob Schaeffer, Public Education Director at FairTest: National Center for Fair and Open Testing, was a part of these talks. He called in to Hofstra’s Morning Wake Up Call to analyze what this decision means for future Hofstra students.

A proposal to require labels on food products containing ingredients from genetically modified crops is getting closer to a vote in the New York Legislature. Stacie Orell, campaign director for GMO Free New York is up in Albany this week to push for a debate on the issue.

Orell believes labels will help consumers learn what they are eating and at what cost: to the environment and their own health.

Several other states already have labeling laws, with others set to adopt similar legislation once other states follow suit.

I sat down with Stacie for Hofstra’s Morning Wake Up Call earlier today on 88.7 fm Radio Hofstra University to get the scoop on GMOs. Take a listen!
